A Student Splash Out in Glasgow

This last blog post is going to be a little different to the rest, focusing on spending that SAAS payment properly and getting a top-notch feed. Whilst all my previous posts have been about saving money on a tight student's budget, sometimes you need to treat yourself and go all out. Here's 2 of my top favourite restaurants in Glasgow, perfect for when you're looking to treat yourself.

The Grill on the Corner   £££

The Grill on the Corner Restaurant GlasgowLocated on Bothwell St, the Grill on the Corner is a trendy restaurant specialising in premium aged steaks. Don't let the upmarket vibes put you off, as inside it's a very casual setting, providing the perfect place to go with either friends or family. The menu is quite varied, offering steaks to seafood and oysters to pork chops. Although everything I've ordered or seen from here was top notch, my favourite is the 'blackhouse selected' fillet steak. Top this off with some peppercorn sauce and a side of their finest mac and cheese and you've found yourself a winner. To pair, they do have an extensive wine list if thats your type of thing, and offer plenty of cocktails to keep you quenched. Keeping it simple though, I always pick the draught Moretti, but at £5 a pint sometimes you can't help but feel slightly ripped off. If you've saved room, the desserts on offer are some of the best. A cookies and cream cheesecake or knickerbocker glory? You can't really go wrong.

Six by Nico   £££

Another favourite of mine, but more limited to special occasions, is Six by Nico in Finnieston. This isn't your typical restaurant, more a 'culinary concept' as they describe themselves. Created by chef Nico Simeone, this tasting experience is based on changing themes every six weeks. Past themes have included 'childhood favourites', 'cooking the 70's' and the more well-known 'cooking New York'. Nico takes these themes and carefully chooses six tasting plates from each. For example, the New York theme had menu items including 'Little Italy' and 'Flatiron Building' which sticking to their names, feature a more exotic twist on what you might expect. Using ingredients such as pumpkin seed pesto and Jerusalem artichoke, Nico's vision is to create a taste sensation and it definitely does so. The brand new current theme is 'Mad Hatter's Tea Party', a twist on Alice in Wonderland with menu choices like chicken liver parfait 'Cheshire Copy Cat' and a sole 'Checkmate' course, this is definitely one to try.
