A Cheap Pint in Glasgow City Centre
For a lot of us "hard-working students", the first thing we want to do at the end of the week is to head to the pub for a couple. After all, we do deserve it. However, the biggest problem with being at a University in the city centre, is the extortionate prices charged by bars and pubs. Not being surprised when a pint comes in at £4.50, its surprising to find a half-decent place where you can actually have a few and still have some of your SAAS left over. This blog post is all about the places that I've discovered that hand out some pretty good deals and discounts, just by flashing that student ID.
Starting off, The Merchant on West George Street has to be the cheapest student pint in the city. At the bar, ask to buy one of their student saver cards, these only cost £1 and have no expiration date. With one of these, you open up the new menu pricing for students, and with a pint of Tennent's being only £2.15, who can complain? The student saver card pays for itself by the time you buy your first drink, so its definitely worth it.
Not feeling a beer? The student menu also has premium spirits and mixers on offer from £2.50, as well as heavily discounted pitchers if you're really looking to go for it. The Merchant itself is host to a weekly quiz night, and is always showing top sports on their TV's across the pub. They are currently undergoing a refurbishment, making them definitely one to watch for the future.
The Merchant £

The Ark £
One of the more livelier bars and with its own beer garden, the Ark is located just up from George Square, right in the city centre and close to Strathclyde Uni. Whilst not as cheap as the Merchant, it definitely makes up for it with their pool tables, craft beer offering and lively atmosphere. They offer a "more." loyalty card, where each food or drink purchase providing points to be used to take money off future purchases. If you're looking for a snack with your drink then head to the Ark on a Wednesday for 25p wings, and 25p pancakes on a Thursday. Yes, 25p... Stocking Brewdog, Rekorderlig and a whole list of IPAs, there's something for everyone.
